There is a growing trend for the establishment of community food gardens and allotments in Kilkenny. As well as reflecting an increasing interest in ‘growing your own’, the phenomenon owes much to the increased time on many rural people’s hands due to unemployment and retirement. Allotments provide fresh and healthy food as well as many other benefits to those involved, such as increased social contact, relaxation, enjoyment and recreation.
Kilkenny Leadership Partnership (“KLP”) has supported the groups in Callan, Goresbridge, Piltown, Graiguenamanagh and Urlingford through both the LEADER and other programmes. Piltown’s award winning community allotment group show is an example of the hard work and dedication by those involved in allotment gardening.
