Cushendale Woolen Mills
Cushendale Woolen Mills, located in Graiguenamanagh, County Kilkenny, is a heritage textile manufacturer with roots dating back to 1778. Operated by the Cushen family for six generations. Today Miriam Cushen supported by her father Philip, carries the torch of this incredible business story and the mill continues a tradition of over 700 years of wool weaving on its historic site. Cushendale is one of the last woolen mills collecting "Irish" fleece to dye, card, spin and weave at the historic mill.
Renowned for its high-quality, high-value woolen products, Cushendale supplies to premium retailers both in Ireland and internationally, including markets in New York and London. While the majority of its wool—such as mohair and merino—is imported, the mill is committed to increasing the use of native Irish wool, particularly from Galway sheep, which currently represents about 20% of its production. This share is sourced both locally and from other parts of Ireland, and Cushendale aims to expand this effort as part of its long-term vision.
KLP (Kilkenny LEADER Partnership) supports this initiative and is encouraging Kilkenny sheep farmers to become part of this growing value chain, helping to strengthen the local wool economy and preserve a unique cultural and industrial legacy.
UPGRADE ON THE WAY
In 2025, Cushendale Woolen Mills was awarded LEADER funding from the KLP Board to replace two of their four weaving looms to newer and more efficient versions, allowing them to double production capacity, enhance operational efficiency, and create five new jobs! Supporting craft and particularly innovative craft is a significant strategic action in KLP's Local Development Strategy
