Traveller Child Health Promotion Worker
(Brighter Beginnings)
(2-year contract – 1.25 day per week).
The overall aim of this post is child health promotion and signposting to additional supports when required. This post will be supported and mentored by the Traveller Brighter Beginnings Nursing Team and HSE child health services. The post is in line with the South East year NTHAP implementation plan to support and improve Traveller child health across the region under the Traveller Brighter Beginnings Initiative which aims ‘To work collaboratively to enhance the overall health outcomes of Traveller children by addressing their unique healthcare needs through the implementation of culturally sensitive, accessible, and equitable healthcare services’ through a Social Determinants of Health lens (SETHU Strategic Plan 2023-2028).
Working as part of Traveller Community Health Team the Traveller Child Health Promotion Worker will work with any other relevant organisation who have a remit with the Traveller community under Child Health. This post will be line managed by the Traveller Health Project & Family Support Coordinator.
The purpose of the post will be:
The main focus of the role is to work closely with the HSE Traveller Health Nursing team in planning, developing, and delivering Child Health and Wellbeing information, signposting and educational workshops and;
- Outreach – for the child health information and signposting.
- Outreach to provide linkage with for direct health inputs from The HSE Traveller Health Nursing team
- Improve understanding family health plan
- Improve Health literacy.
- Gathering an impression of families understanding of child health, importance and how of related appointments are managed by families.
- To work as part of the Traveller Health team specifically in promoting positive Child Health and Wellbeing with Traveller families.
A wider element of the work will involve;
- To advocate for the voice of Travellers by attending relevant health service meetings.
- To support Traveller Families to participate in Child Health and Wellbeing initiatives and programmes.
- To report on learnings with the support of the Traveller Brighter Beginnings team on all learnings and initiatives. The HSE Traveller Health Nursing team can provide support regarding same where necessary.
Hours of work will be 1 day per week, some flexibility will be required.
Requirement for the Post
- Be educated at a minimum to a Level 6 in the area of health, community or wellbeing. Have a good standard of literacy and IT skills.
- Have a very good understanding of Traveller issues, particularly in relation to Traveller Child and Family Health and Wellbeing and the issues which impact on health.
- Be able to demonstrate good verbal and written communication, interpersonal and group work skills and have capacity to work as a lone worker and as part of a team
- Access to transport and hold a clean driving license.
- To work as part of the organisational goals and objectives including participation in subgroups.
- To provide quarterly reports on work as this is a pilot programme and to collate KPI’s relevant to the post.
- To develop appropriate responses to the health and wellbeing needs of the Traveller community, especially children.
Being a member of the Traveller Community and /or candidates with clinical training will be at an advantage.
