Well-being and Awareness Worker

The above position will work in partnership with the Community Health Workers in the Traveller Health Project and any other relevant organisation who have a remit with Travellers under Mental Health and Well-being.  The overall aim of this post will be to support Travellers to talk about Mental Health and reach out for additional supports when required.

The purpose of the post will be:

  • To work as part of the Traveller Health team specifically in promoting positive Mental Health and Wellbeing within the Travelling community.
  • To liaise with the relevant professionals in promoting the service to the Travelling community in a way that will reduce barriers and build positive relationships.
  • To access and spread information on Mental Health support services that is available for the Traveller community in County Kilkenny.
  • To identify the Mental Health needs of Travellers and participate in community-based initiatives to develop a response to those needs.
  • To advocate for and represent the voice of Travellers by attending relevant health service meetings.
  • To attend relevant training courses and participate in training that would develop personal skills to support this role.
  • To support Travellers to participate in Mental Health and Wellbeing initiatives and programmes.

Hours of work will be 14 per week based around two days depending on the needs of the service which will be determined by the Health Coordinator. Flexibility will be required.

Requirement for the Post

  • The person appointed would ideally be a member of the Traveller Community as this is a peer led position.
  • Be educated to at least Junior Certificate level with good literacy and basic IT skills.
  • Have a good understanding of Traveller issues, particularly in relation to Traveller Mental Health and Wellbeing, and the issues which impact on health.
  • Be willing to undergo training.
  • Can demonstrate good communication, interpersonal and group work skills.
  • Demonstrate capacity to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Access to transport and hold a clean driving license would be an advantage.
