New Multi-functional Sports Centre:

Promoting the concept of an active and healthy local community, work has begun on a state of the art multi functional indoor community sports centre in Thomastown.

Planning

After the imminent closure of the old Thomastown Community Sports Hall, key community groups in Thomastown came together to discuss the pressing need for a future facility. There were no other sport facilities in the town and the closed  sports hall had now been surveyed and deemed unfit for use. The groups concluded that the provision of a well planned sports and community facility would be a great access to the town.  G.C. Leisure Trust was formed by members of various local community groups to address the need for sports and recreational facilities in the town.  G.C. Leisure approached KLP for support and advice on the LEADER application process. After a successful application the project was awarded €300.000 under the  Village Renewal and Development Measure.

Hub for Sports

The project will feature a multipurpose indoor sport facility which will provide a broad range of activities- basketball, volleyball, badminton, indoor soccer etc .  It will be designed to cater for the diverse interests  of the local community across all age profiles.  It will also provide a modern gymnasium to serve the leisure and fitness needs of all age groups in the locality.  It will provide a high quality range of facilities not currently in the local community.  This new facility will act as a hub and driver for sports and recreational participation for a wide rural hinterland of Thomastown and surrounding parishes.
